Representing language through origami
Origami letters
I hand-crafted origami letters by following youtube tutorials and quickly learnt how a font can be made with paper.
Crease patterns
By unfolding the letters and applying an origami rule called two-colourbility, a new font was created.
Alphabet
I created every letter using origami, unfolded them and applied the two-colourability to create the ‘Unfold’ font.
Colour connotations
I tracked my emotions while creating the letters and used colours to represent the tracked emotions.
Japaanese proverbs
Traditional Japanese proverbs are messages that have been passed down for generations. They are known to relax the atmosphere and create a good mood for the reader/speaker, all of which closely relates to the beliefs around origami. A lot of the proverbs are still around today and have a beautiful and simple meaning.
Love and a cough cannot be hidden.
恋とせきとは隠されぬ
Fall seven times and stand up eight.
七転び八起き
After a storm comes a calm.
雨降って地固まる
Laughter and smiles will bring happiness and fortune.
笑う門には福来たる
